Moving Through the World Safely

Imagine you have a new superhero sense, a superpower that helps you know where everything is around you (especially when you are not looking at it). Look around you and see where something is behind you. Say to yourself, “that is behind me, and it is near me.”

Activating your superpower:

  • First all superheroes will look around and see where things are behind them. Your turn, do this, identify where something is behind you.

  • They will remember where it is behind them. Did you do this?

  • Then you need to say to yourself, “that is behind me, and it is near me.”

Testing your superpower:

  • Now look straight ahead.

  • Now recall where that is behind you. Is it within arm’s reach or further away?  Is it to your right or to your left?

  • And that is a superpower you need to use.

This superpower is like having a built-in map in your mind that tells you where everything is around you, for example, where your toys are in your room, or where your friends are when you are outside playing with them, and where other things are, like the swing set or a fence when you are running around. Like all superpowers you need to practice this for it to become a superpower.

Even if you're not looking directly at them, your superpower is knowing where everything is when not looking at it. This special sense makes it easy for you to move and play without accidentally bumping into anything, like magic guiding you to navigate your surroundings smoothly. But you need to start by first looking around and asking yourself where things are on your map.

Moving through the world safely: Using your Superpower!

Moving through the world safely is like having a magical sense that tells you where everything is around you. Imagine you're in a playground with friends and toys. This super sense helps you know where to move and play without bumping into things!

What is your Personal and General Space?

We have two types of spaces:

  1. Our personal space - This is like an invisible bubble around you. It's your own special area.

  2. General space - this is the bigger area where everyone can move around and play. General space is just that, it is everything around you that is not your personal space (your bubble).

Your superpower is needed for Moving Through Space:

We have superpowers that help us move in that bigger general space. We learn to change our location, control how we move, stop when needed, and move safely without bumping into others.

Thinking About Our Whole Body. Magically Moving Through Space Safely:

Knowing where you are in relation to everything else. Imagine you're a superhero on a mission, and you need to use your entire body to overcome challenges and conquer the playground safely!

Try Moving Creatively and Safely:

Imagine you're dancing to your favorite music. Your superpower helps you move in fun and safe ways. It's about exploring and being creative while keeping safe.

Environmental Cues: Our Secret Helpers

Our world is full of secret helpers called environmental cues. These are things like signs, sounds, and colors that help us understand where to go and how to move safely.

So, let's put on our adventure capes and use our special superpower to play and move in exciting, safe ways. Remember, knowing about the space around us makes us the best at moving and playing!
