Get Things Done: A Simple Guide to Scheduling for Students

Managing your time is a skill that can help you feel more organized and less stressed while accomplishing your goals. Whether it's finishing homework, practicing a hobby, or spending time with friends, good scheduling makes it all possible. Let’s explore how to create a schedule that works for you.

Step 1: Make Your Task List

You will have two lists: One on what you have to do. Another on what you want to do.

First, list everything you need (or have) to do:

  • Include your schoolwork, home chores, etc.

Second, list everything you want to do:

  • Fun activities, relaxation, meeting with friends, etc.

Step 2: Breaking larger tasks on Your List Into Smaller

  • Big tasks can be split into small ones. Small tasks are easier to do.

Learning activity:

  • You are asked to clean your bedroom. Big task? (well when I look at my messy room it is 🙂)

  • So break it down (your  list):

    1. Fold and put my clean clothing away.

    2. Put my dirty clothing in the clothing hamper.

    3. Pick up toys and books from the floor.

    4. Make my bed

DONE!

Step 2: Estimate Your Time

Think about how long each task will take and add a little extra time just in case.

  • Example: If you think it will take 20 minutes to finish a worksheet, plan for 25 minutes.

This gives you some breathing room in case things take longer than expected.

Step 3: Map It Out

Use a planner, calendar, or even a piece of paper to block out times for your tasks.

  • Example: “Do math homework at 5 PM, practice piano at 6 PM.”
Mapping your tasks helps you see what’s ahead and stay on track.

Step 4: Prioritize Your Tasks

Ask yourself:

  • What’s most important or due soon?

  • What can wait until later?

Start with the tasks that matter most, and then move on to the others.

Step 5: Be Flexible

Life doesn’t always go as planned, and that’s okay! If something unexpected comes up, adjust your schedule. The key is to stay focused on your priorities while staying open to changes.

Why Scheduling Helps

  1. You Get More Done: Planning ahead helps you focus and stay productive.

  2. You Feel Less Stressed: Knowing what to do and when makes things easier.

  3. You Build Confidence: Each time you stick to your schedule, you prove to yourself that you can achieve your goals.

Try It This Week

Give scheduling a try! Start with a task list, plan your time, and see how it feels to follow your schedule. Adjust as needed to find what works best for you.

With practice, scheduling becomes a habit that makes your week feel smoother and more manageable.
