How to Read Food Labels: A Healthy Eating Guide 1.1

What is a Food Label?

A food label is a list that details what's in the food product you are about to eat. It provides crucial information about four categories you need to pay attention to:

  1. Ingredients: The ingredients are the things they mixed together to make the product.

  2. Nutritional Facts: The nutritional facts are the most important information. This lets you know how valuable this food product is to your body.

  3. Serving Size: Serving size can be deceptive.  The nutrition facts are always based on the serving size being used to determine the nutrition facts. Be careful because different companies use different serving sizes to report those facts, making it difficult to compare one product to another.

  4. Percentage of Daily Value (%DV): This tells you that of the amount of that nutritional piece you should have what percentage is this.

Leaning Activity:

A food label will tell you how much energy (calories), fat, sugar, protein, vitamins, and minerals the food product contains. Knowing this allows you to understand what is in the food that will help your body grow and stay healthy and make healthier choices.
